Power cut


If you put a heavy load on the electrical system, a fuse may trip and the power will be cut. You can easily fix this yourself after you have fixed the actual cause of the overload.

Some student housing have an electrical cabinet with switch fuses and others have a fuse cabinet with plug fuses. In the corridors, there is an electrical cabinet with switch fuses in the corridor. These protect the electrical system from overloads.

Switch fuses

  1. Open the electrical cabinet
  2. Identify which fuse has become overloaded – the switch will have fallen down.
  3. Reset the fuse by pushing up the switch that has fallen down.

Plug fuses

  1. Open the fuse cabinet.
  2. Look for the blown fuse – it will be the one where the coloured metal disc has fallen off.
  3. Unscrew the fuse cap to the blown fuse.
  4. Remove the blown fuse from the fuse cap and insert a new fuse.
  5. Screw in the fuse cap holding the new fuse.

Acute power cut

This does not work

The following do not work in the event of a power interruption:

  • Broadband
  • TV
  • Hot water (cold water is supplied as normal)
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Heating
  • Ventilation
  • Laundry rooms and booking boards
  • Fridge and freezer (These retain the cold as long as you don’t open them. If possible, avoid opening then during a power interruption.)

Tips!

A power interruption affects the heating. If you keep the windows closed it takes quite a long time before the temperature in your housing falls. If the power cut is during the winter and you think it is starting to get cold in your housing, you can keep warm by using a blanket or putting on extra clothes until the heating is back on. Candlelight can increase the temperature. Another temperature-raising tip is to gather several friends in the same room. Four people generate the same heat as a small radiator.
