AF Bostäder regularly arranges customer activities to promote wellbeing and health. Previously, the events have mainly focused on movement and exercise, but in line with the company’s cultural sustainability strategy, different types of experiences are now being offered. These include pottery painting, ghost walks and a Lucia performance with a student choir.
“According to our social sustainability strategy, we are to strive to create everyday life for the students characterised by wellbeing, a sense of security, good health and participation,” says Elin Svensson, Social Coordinator at AF Bostäder. “In parallel, the cultural sustainability strategy states that we are to work for cultural experiences and togetherness and promote both inclusiveness and a diversity of traditions. Using this as a basis, we have broadened our customer activities with more social and cultural elements.”
“Basically, it concerns getting students together to create and enjoy being together,” says Elin Svensson. “The physical activities, such as the Marathon fun run and the exercise leagues in football and volleyball, will remain, as will the new addition, Pilates. Exercise contributes to both physical and mental health, but it’s at least as important to meet neighbours, socialise and be inspired. That’s why physical conditions, such as study rooms, outdoor environments and spaces for socialising in our housing areas, are included in our strategies. If we can get the students to try something new that is particularly gratifying, preferably in meetings between cultures.”
A large number of staff are involved in the customer activities, and they all strive to find new ideas that complement the activities in student life.
“One of the year’s new activities was pottery painting at Målamik in Lund,” says Elin Svensson. “Working with pottery is relaxing, almost meditative, and also creative and social. After a short introduction, the students were able to decorate mugs, jugs, plates and bowls, which were then glazed. We arranged two sessions and the activity was our most popular ever. Our staff members also got a chance to give it a try.”
“In the early autumn we arranged a ghost walk in Lund,” says Elin Svensson. “Together with ghost guide Jacques Schultz, we explored the dark sides of the city, university and student life. There were exciting ghost stories and dark secrets on two different walks, one in Swedish and one in English.”
“As previously, we have continued to arrange ongoing activities such as flea markets, photo competitions, the caretakers’ highly appreciated courtyard get-togethers and our popular Swedish song contest, in which the students always surprise with their creativity. All our activities attract both Swedish and international students. Among the latter, our annual hiking excursion has been particularly popular, as are the events linked to our holidays and festivals, such as Christmas crafts and the Lucia performance with a student choir. The year’s Swedish “fika” competition was also, a success, of course – a delicious, creative and social experience for those who want to learn more about Sweden,” says Elin Svensson.
