History and fun facts
The pear (Pyrus communis) has been cultivated in Europe for a long time but has never become as common in Sweden as the apple. This is because pear trees require warmer conditions and are more sensitive.
In Sweden, pear trees thrive best in the southern parts of the country. They can sometimes be found growing wild, but these are usually trees that originated from cultivated varieties.
Historically, pears were considered a luxury fruit. This was partly because they were more difficult to grow and partly because they cannot be stored for as long as apples.
Pears have been used in many ways throughout history. They have been eaten fresh, dried or cooked.
