Aspegrenska huset

Aspegrenska huset, located next to AF-borgen, is being carefully renovated to once again become student housing. This project will create a unique place to live with a strong connection to Lund’s student life.

Aspegrenska huset is located at Sankt Annegatan 1, in the heart of Lund’s student life, next to AF-borgen and Lundagård. A careful renovation is now underway to restore the building as student housing. When the project is complete, 17 students will live here, across nine apartments. The housing will mainly consist of shared apartments, along with a few one-room apartments. Great care is taken to preserve the building’s architecture and history. Characteristic period details are retained while creating modern and functional student housing.

Timeline

Project start: April 2026
Move-in: Early 2027

Scope

  • Renovation of the existing building
  • Conversion into 9 student apartments
  • Housing for a total of 17 students
  • Preservation of cultural and architectural values

Disturbances

During the construction period, some building traffic and noise may occur in the area around Sankt Annegatan 1.

Project background

The name Aspegrenska huset comes from Inspector Gustaf Aspegren, who commissioned the original building on this site in 1840. The house was used as a so-called student barracks, with rooms for 13 students. The rooms were located on the second floor and in the attic.

The building remained in the Aspegren family until 1902, when it was purchased by Akademiska Föreningen (AF). It was then used for various parts of student life, including accommodation for restaurant staff.

The original building was demolished during the 1940s and replaced by the current building, completed in 1947. The new building also retained the name Aspegrenska huset. It consists of three floors and originally contained 17 student rooms. The rooms were arranged along one side of a corridor, which is reflected in the façade with its 17 windows, one for each room. Each room was approximately 12 square metres and included a small hallway with a washbasin and wardrobe, but no cooking facilities. Toilets and showers were shared in the corridor.

In the 1970s, students moved out and the building was converted into offices. For a period, Radio AF also operated from the building. In 2019, AF Bostäder acquired the property with the aim of restoring it as student housing.

Architecture

The building was designed by architect Hans Westman, a pioneer of functionalist architecture. It is considered Lund’s first modern student housing building and a predecessor to areas such as Tomegapsgården, Studentlyckan, Ulrikedal and Delphi.

The façades are clad in red brick and divided into sections by white marble details forming a grid pattern. The entrance has rounded corners, and above the door is a sandstone owl. The owl is reused and originates from another historic building at Sandgatan 12, designed by Fredrik Sundbärg in 1906.
